64 Bit Cantabile
Today I managed to get the first 64 bit (x64) version of Cantabile running.
Although I did alot of ground work to make this as seemless as possible, I expected more troubles than I actually encountered. About 95% of functionality worked on the first run and in initial testing I've only seen a few bugs.
The biggest problem now is finding some plugins to test with - they're very few and far between - which may prompt the question: why develop a 64 bit version of Cantabile in the first place? Well there's a couple of reasons.
- Moving to x64 for VST is a bit of a chicken and egg problem - plugin developer's wont bother with x64 if there are no hosts and host developers wont bother if there are no plugins. Someone has to break the cycle and the more x64 hosts, the more plugins will come around. In other words - I don't mind doing my bit to help this happen.
- With practically all new processors now able to support x64 operating systems and Microsoft including the x64 version of Vista when purchasing the x86 version, its only a matter of time before more and more people start moving to 64 bit. In other words - I'm going to have to support it eventually so I might as well start now - less code to fixup later.
- Curiosity about x64 development in general.
Anyway its done now and seems to work well.
