Changes to website and licensing

Today I put up a new version of the cantabilesoftware.com website and released Cantabile build 2037 which introduces some changes to Cantabile's licensing which I feel obliged to explain.

Most significantly, Cantabile Lite has been discontinued. There are a few reasons for this. I can no longer justify the support and maintenance overheads - which were considerable. Having so many different editions complicates the code and makes the build and upload times very long. Having a free version also greatly increases the support load. There are also business strategy reasons for doing this.

The demo versions have been discontinued, replaced with fully functional 30-day trials which I'm hoping will improve the ability to properly evaluate the software. The disabled saved demos were just too restrictive.

The serial number format for registered owners has been changed. The intent here is to greatly reduce the ability for crackers to write a keygen. In order to do this I need to use an encryption strength that can't be cracked by currently available technologies. Unfortunately this results in very long serial numbers, but I expect most users will just use copy paste anyway.

Please note that the longer serial number was chosen in preference to an activation scheme where the software needs to "phone home" - something that most users are understandably opposed to (even though it provides the best protection for the software developer).

Finally, there's been some slight changes to the pricing of both editions, Solo up a bit, Performer down a bit.

I hope this answers any questions about why things are changing, but as always comments and quetions are welcome.

So goodbye cantabile lite, you were the best freeware ever, I understaind why you're doing this but, if you dont want to develop it anymore, could you just leave the install file somewere as an "abandonware", for exemple on the old topten website. I'm sure there is a lot of people like me, who are not a live keyboarder and just need an host to play a few notes on their favorite vsti. Cantabile lite was the better host for this use, the only one who was really working... THE ONLY ONE!!!!

I agree with the above,it's a great pity to loose the free host, indeed the only one that works. For me it was a gift because it's simply impossible to buy anything on line ( no credit card ) So..yes,could you leave the install file?

Cantabile Lite was an excellent and easy to use program, with some limitations, and I'm sure the other versions are even better. For performers I think SOLO is well worth the money, and I'll probably be buying it. Besides, what else is out there that comes close?
