External Tools

Cantabile now supports configurable external tools that can be accessed from a new "Tools" drop down on the home tab ribbon:

Configuring these tools is done in the Options -> External Tools page:

Most of that is fairly self explanatory except perhaps the "Menus" options. These control where the command appears:

  • Home Tab - appears in the main tools drop down on the Home Tab.
  • MIDI Files - appears in the menu shown when right clicking the name of a MIDI file in the Media Files Panel.
  • Audio Files - appears in the menu shown when right clicking the name of a MIDI file in the Media Files Panel.

In other words you can use these external tools to external launch editors for media files. You can even have multiple editors configured and they'll all appear in the menu.

You can also have completely hidden tools and tools that automatically executed on startup.

The option to prompt before launching is primarily to show the resolved variables - say some tool isn't launching correctly and you want to check what's going on. It could also be used to confirm a destructive or length operation (eg: launching a mp3 encoder or similar).

External Tools is available in Cantabile Solo and Cantabile Performer, from build 2008.
